A winter wedding in York

Emma and Charlie got married at The Hospitium in York and we were lucky enough to be invited to perform for them and their guests in this amazing historical venue.

The Hospitium is one of our favourite home town venues, and we’ve performed there many times before. It manages the rare feat of being in the centre of York, but feeling completely secluded – with the river to one side and the wonderful Museum Gardens to the other.

We loaded in to the ground floor whilst everyone was upstairs eating, so by the time the guests came down to start the evening we were all set and ready to go. This is something to keep in mind when booking live music for your wedding or event. Most bands will need around 60 minutes to set up and sound check – and a space to set up in – so it’s worth factoring that in to your planning to minimise disruption to you and your guests. Luckily, The Hospitium is perfectly suited for this.

Charlie and Emma’s first dance was ‘Happy’ by Pharrell, which we had learned especially for them. This upbeat number perfectly set the tone for the evening and got everyone on to the dance floor. We were originally planning on two sets, but on the night our couple asked us to play one longer set. We did some quick rearranging on the fly and played on through.

There was a real mix of ages, and some of the younger audience members were starting to get sleepy as the night wore on. The longer set worked really well, and we were able to switch over to our ‘iPod DJ’ in time to let those younger guests make their way back home and to bed.

This was our first wedding of the year and a welcome return to one of York’s many unique venues. It was a real pleasure to play for Emma and Charlie, and we already have our return visit to The Hospitium booked for later in the year!
