Saturday saw our very first wedding gig of 2014. We picked up almost where we left off, at Sandburn Hall at Flaxton near York. We’d played one of our last wedding gigs of 2013 at Sandburn in November and we were really looking forward to coming back. This time we were playing for Kim and Mark’s wedding.
As always, the staff at Sandburn we’re really friendly and made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. There was a little bit of waiting around as speeches finished, but we were soon setting up in the beautiful oak framed hall. We had our work cut out as timings meant we had just 30 minutes to load in, set up and sound check; but we managed to get everything sorted just in time.
It was soon time for the first dance, and Kim and Mark had chosen Norah Jones’ version of ‘Love Me Tender’ which we thoroughly enjoyed playing. The happy couple finished their first dance to a massive round of applause from their family and friends, and then we made ourselves scarce for another 90 minutes until it was time for our first set.
Show time was, for once, after the buffet. Everyone was in fine form and the dance floor was busy all night. It was a crowd of all ages so we mixed things up to keep everyone entertained. We managed to move from the Killers to Nancy Sinatra, and from Bryan Adams to Blondie – much to the delight of the guests.
This was a great night at what is fast becoming one of our favourite Yorkshire venues. It was a great start to a year that’s already packed with wedding gigs, and we really hope it’s a taste of things to come.
