We ended our summer of playing outdoors with Rick and Heather’s wedding at Aldby Park in the beautiful village of Buttercrambe, North Yorkshire. It was a great gig in an amazing setting to round off a very busy summer for us.
We’d been asked to set up before the guests arrived, so it was early afternoon when we pulled up at the venue. The house is very impressive and looked amazing in the sunshine, after a bit of head scratching we found our way around to the gardens at the back where the marquee was set up. We were really pleased to see Will’s Marquees were providing our venue for the evening. We’d performed in one of their marquees a few weeks earlier so we knew we’d be setting up in style and comfort.
With an empty venue we made short work of the setting up and everything was soon in place for the wedding parties arrival. We stepped outside and were surprised to see the crew from Happy Hogs Catering setting up the outdoor kitchen. We’d last seen these guys (and girls) at a garden party the previous summer and they’d really looked after us, so we were looking forward to more of the same! However, in the end we didn’t have time to grab any food so we had to play with just the tantalising aromas from the barbeque to keep us going.
We should also make special mention to superstar photographer Jim Poyner who we have the pleasure of seeing on roughly an annual basis. Not only is he a great photographer, he’s one of the nicest blokes we know and he’s always been a lucky charm for us when it comes to great gigs!
Show time approached as the sun went down. Our couple had chosen to keep things low key and not have a first dance, instead they had chosen a few specific songs from our set list to be part of the night. We started off with one of our favourites – ‘I saw her standing there’ by The Beatles – and quickly found our stride. At Heather and Rick’s request we also dropped in ‘Go Your Own Way’ by Fleetwood Mac.
After a break for fireworks we were back on and getting everyone on their feet. As we built up towards the end of the night we had a full dance floor and lots of voices singing along with us. We ended the night with ‘Shout’ and a wonderful reception from the crowd – we hope we made their night as special as they made ours.
This was a great venue, a great party, and a great way to end the summer. It also highlighted how many great wedding suppliers there are in Yorkshire and how lucky we are to get to work with so many of them. Here’s to playing outside again next year!
